Diving and Snorkelling on Krk: Beginner Dive or Boat Day?

For a first underwater experience, choose a supervised beginner dive rather than a general boat trip that merely lists snorkelling. The discovery scuba dive in Vrbnik lasts three hours, starts at €89 and has 35 reviews. Certified divers should instead ask a dive centre which sites and depth fit their qualification.

Three activities that are not interchangeable

A discovery dive includes briefing, equipment and close supervision for a newcomer. It is an introduction, not a diving qualification. A boat dive is for people whose experience matches the planned site. Snorkelling stays at the surface and can be part of a cruise, but the time in the water and equipment vary greatly.

Krk’s official tourism information lists dive centres in Njivice, Stara Baška, Baška, Šilo and Vrbnik. It also describes sites around Mali Plavnik, walls, caves and wrecks. That variety does not mean every site is available every day: wind, current, visibility, boat logistics and diver experience determine the choice.

What to check before paying

Ask whether the price includes all equipment, boat transport and insurance required by the operator. State your certification, last dive and comfort level honestly. For a discovery dive, confirm the operator’s health questionnaire, minimum age and swimming requirements on the booking page; do not infer them from another centre.

For snorkelling, ask how much of the advertised duration is actual water time, whether mask and fins are included and whether there is an easy way back onto the boat. A cruise with a “snorkelling stop” is not the same product as a guided snorkelling excursion.

When to postpone

Do not pressure an operator to use a site when conditions have changed. A sheltered alternative may look less dramatic but be the responsible choice. If you have a medical concern about diving, obtain advice from an appropriately qualified doctor before booking; an article cannot clear you to dive.

Our recommendation

Book the Vrbnik discovery dive if you are a beginner who wants scuba rather than a swim stop. Certified divers should contact a centre with their details before choosing a site. For casual surface time, compare diving and snorkelling activities and read the inclusions carefully.
